Myopia Management for Children

Myopia control treatment options for kids

More and more children around the world are becoming short-sighted (myopic). It is a concern for many parents whose children have this eye condition that seemingly gets worse every year.

However there are ways to slow down this worsening, called myopia control or myopia management. This involves your eye care practitioner prescribing specific spectacle lenses, contact lenses and/or atropine eye drops and monitoring their success over time. Click here to read about why myopia management matters – it’s about long term eye health and quality of life, not just about having a lower prescription in glasses (although that’s a great side effect)!

It’s important to note that there’s nothing currently available which can promise to STOP myopia progression. The current research and available options can work to SLOW DOWN myopia progression – by about a third to a half on average, depending on the option selected and your child’s individual factors

iSee Orthokeratology Treatment (Corneal Reshaping Contact Lenses Treatment- CRT)

This is a non-surgical technology in which contact lenses are designed to safely and gradually reshape the curvature of the front of the eye (cornea) to improve or eliminate nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism.  These Rigid gas permeable contact lenses are worn overnight while sleeping (8-10 hours).  They are removed upon awakening and provide clear vision without using glasses or contacts during waking hours.  The best part is that iSee corneal reshaping is safe, non-surgical, non-invasive and reversible.

Both Dr. Bhatt and Dr. Hodes are certified to fit the FDA Approved iSee Orthokeratology Myopia Management lens.

Similarities between MiSight and Orthokeratology

While Orthokeratology (also called Ortho K) and MiSight lenses are fundamentally very different, they can both achieve similar outcomes.

Studies show that both Ortho K and MiSight can slow the rate of myopia progression in children by an average of around 50%, compared to wearing single-vision lenses. As with any health treatment, there is individual variability in treatment outcomes — some patients may achieve better than expected results, and others less.

Ortho K and MiSight lenses reduce myopia progression by focusing peripheral light in front of the retina, rather than behind the retina as occurs with regular glasses that only produce a single plane of focus. This is believed to reduce the stimuli for the eye to grow longer. Reducing abnormal eye growth and elongation is the goal of myopia control treatment.
